FREdome-YEA / WeCare bulletin

July 3, 2008

Have you seen “The girl who silenced the world for 5 minutes…” – a child telling adults off at a UN assembly?

This is exactly what FREdome-YEA is all about!

It’s well worth watching:

The Speaker is Severn Suzuki, aged 12 at the time in 1992.

In 2002, at the age of 22, she made these comments about the world then and now.

“I spoke for six minutes and received a standing ovation. Some of the delegates even cried. I thought that maybe I had reached some of them, that my speech might actually spur action. Now, a decade from Rio, after I’ve sat through many more conferences, I’m not sure what has been accomplished. My confidence in the people in power and in the power of an individual’s voice to reach them has been deeply shaken.” Severn Cullis-Suzuki.
